CLASSES

The different classes have different age limits. Remember that only gradings earned at the youth and working dog class count for the breed survey, and the working class is the only class where CACIBs are handed out.

PUPPY CLASS

4-6 months
6-9 months
9-12 months

In the puppy classes, the puppies are given "puppy ratings" of VP (Very Promising), P (Promising) or LP (Less promising). These are not official ratings and are not suitable for breeding purposes. They are simply to give you an idea of how promising your puppy appears at this age.
Puppies go through many stages while growing so these ratings should be taken with that in consideration. Just because your puppy does not do well in a puppy class does not mean that he may not do better as an adult. Along the same lines, just because a puppy earns a VP does not mean that it will be superb as an adult.

YOUTH (JUGEND) CLASS, YOUNG DOG (JUNGHUND) CLASS

12-18 months
18-24 months

In these classes, adult show ratings are awarded. The dog can earn SG (Very good) or G (Good) in the young dog classes. The ratings earned in these classes can be used for the breed survey and breeding purposes later in the dogs life.

WORKING DOG (GEBRAUCHSHUND) CLASS

24 months+

Once the dog hits 24 months, they move into the working dog classes. This class is for 24+ month old dogs that are titled. The dog must have earned a SchH, IPO or HGH title to compete in this class. In this class, the dog can earn a rating of G (Good), SG (Very good) or V (Excellent). The working dog classes are the only classes where a dog can earn a V (Excellent) show rating in the German Shepherd Dog breed. At the Sieger shows hosted by DARPG-Sieger and occasionally Schaeferhund-Verein, selected dogs may also earn a VA (Excellent Select) rating.

VETERANS

6 years+

Dogs competing in this class must have been previously rated V (Excellent) and be over 6 years of age. The dogs are not officially rated but are awarded a placing.

PROGENY (NACHKOMMEN) GROUP

4 months+

A group of 3-6 dogs sired by the same dog, which are also entered in the regular classes. The progeny groups are ranked, and all dogs in a progeny group earn a ribbon. The judges look for uniformity in the offspring as well as a distinct "stamp" of the sire. A dog entered in the progeny group is automatically entered in the respective individual class. No separate entries are needed, but an entry for the progeny group has to depict all dogs in the group.

KENNEL (ZUCHTGRUPPEN) GROUP

4 months+

A group of 3-6 dogs bred by one kennel. The kennel groups are ranked, and all dogs in a kennel group earn a ribbon. The dogs should be uniform and distinctive. A dog entered in the kennel group is automatically entered in the respective individual class. No separate entries are needed, but an entry for the kennel group has to depict all dogs in the group.

EVENTS

Your main entry must be depicting the dog in one of the events in the 'Individual Assessment'. Entries depicting the 'Character Test' are considered extra entries. The show will be held outside year round on varying locations.

INDIVIDUAL ASSESSMENT

STACK
All aspects of the dog are examined from his head right down to the colour of his toe nails, his temperament and movement.

GAIT
The dogs are gaited in a very large circle in the ring, so movement can be evaluated. All aspects of the dog are examined from his head right down to the colour of his toe nails, his temperament and movement.

INSPECTION
The judge measures height, chest depth and circumference, weight, testicles and dentition.

CHARACTER TEST

GUNSHOT TEST
The dog should stand firmly showing no concern or agitation when shots are fired. Dogs who fail this test are disqualified from the show. The gunshot test is not conducted in the puppy class.
